African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) invites applications to its Artificial Intelligence For Development (AI4D) Scholarships program for AI Ph.D. Students and Early Career Researchers in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The International Development Research Center (IDRC) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) have awarded the African Center for Technology Studies a grant to support the training of Ph.D. students in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), as well as the research work of Early Career Academics or Scholars (Early Career and Post-Doc) in AI & ML.
Since women and students from low-income countries who do not have access to universities that can offer PhDs in AI may be disadvantaged in getting a Ph.D. in AI, a call for proposals will be issued specifically for these two groups of people.
The AI4D scholarships will be awarded with the aim of achieving a consistent distribution of recipients across lusophone, francophone, anglophone, and Sub-Saharan Africa. There will also be a method to build a balanced gender and geographic representation.
The AI4D scholarships were established with the following classes of people in mind:
- Registered Ph.D. students
- Disadvantaged Female Students and Students from Low-Income Countries
- Early Career Academics
- Post-doctoral researchers
- Senior Scholars

Eligibility
- All candidates should have strong academic qualifications and show a desire to pursue a career in academia.
- Both applicants must be Sub-Saharan African nationals or permanent residents.
- Both applicants must have a clear understanding of the language of instruction at their chosen host university (English, French or Portuguese).
