Associate Professor in Public Administration with A Focus on Education and/or Impact

The Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) offers a position for an Associate Professor in Public Administration with A Focus on Education and/or Impact.

In this role, candidate will have a focus on education and societal impact. As an Associate Professor, he/she will teach and manage primarily in the Governance and Organization bachelor and the Public Administration master. He/she will also contribute to the research program New Public Governance (NPG). The mission of NPG is to advance the theoretical and empirical knowledge of contemporary governance practices, critically reflect on those practices, improve them, and set the agenda for further big questions arising from the academic governance debate. In their mission, they emphasize the societal impact of research and teaching, and the underlying values of responsibility, openness, and personal involvement. If candidate’s expertise is in areas of algorithmic governance, quality (integrity) of governance, welfare governance, or governance of security, then VU especially welcome his/her application. 

Tasks

The successful candidate: 

  • Teach and develop courses at the bachelor and master level, and you do thesis supervision
  • Drive the strategy and organization of an educational program, e.g. as a program director. And also contribute to the development of educational policy at the level of an educational domain or faculty
  • Contribute to societal impact
  • Produce independent research and publish academic and professional publications
    acquire external (third stream) research funding
  • Where appropriate, co-supervise PhD students and mentor students and junior colleagues
  • Actively contribute to the scholarly community of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, as well as to the Faculty of Social Sciences

Salary

On a full-time basis, the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of € 5.506 and a maximum of € 6.702, depending on experience.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate for the Associate Professor in Public Administration with A Focus on Education and/or Impact

  • has a PhD degree in a relevant social science discipline, e.g. Public Administration or Political Science
  • is recognized by excellence in education: functions at a senior level for at least 5 years, is a recognized expert in the field of educational development (subject content and didactics)
  • is able to bear responsibility for the strategy and organization of an educational programme and to contribute to the formation and formulation of educational policy
  • holds relevant qualifications or credentials for teaching such as a Senior Teaching Qualification (SKO)
  • has significant experience in supervising BA, MA, and PhD students 
  • is an (inter)nationally renowned voice in the field. And has, for example, a broad network and long-term cooperation with social partners (companies, government, non-profit)
  • has demonstrable awareness of the social relevance of scientific results
  • has an excellent command of Dutch and English 
  • can work in a team as well as independently
