Applications are currently open for the Joint Japan-World Bank Graduate Scholarship Programme for students from least-developed countries.
Citizens of specific developing nations who have supported their governments’ development efforts in the past and have relevant professional expertise are eligible to apply to the JJ/WBGSP for master’s programmes in development-related fields.
JJ/WBGSP provides scholarships for 52 participating master’s Programmes at 27 universities in the United States, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan in important development fields such as infrastructure management, tax policy, and economic policy management, subject to funding availability.
It is an important component of the World Bank’s efforts to promote economic development and shared prosperity through investing in education, capacity building, and developing human resources in the developing world.
The World Bank’s Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC) provides scholarships to students and young researchers, contributing to the World Bank’s mission of forging new dynamic approaches to capacity development and knowledge sharing in the developing world.
Benefits
The World Bank Graduate Scholarship provides the recipient with the following benefits:
- Economy class air travel between the home country and the host university at the start of the study program and immediately following the end of the scholarship period.
- In addition to the two-way air travel, scholars will receive a US $500 travel allowance for each trip.
- Tuition for the graduate program and the cost of basic medical insurance obtained through the university.
- While on campus during the scholarship period, a monthly subsistence allowance is provided to cover all living expenses (accommodations, food, etc., including books).
Eligibility
Applicants for the World Bank Graduate Scholarship must meet the following criteria:
- Be a national of a World Bank member developing country list;
- Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country;
- Be in good health.
- Hold a bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree earned at least 3 years prior to the Application Deadline date;
- Be employed in development-related work in a paid full-time position at the time of submitting the scholarship application.

- Two recommendation letters if the research requires it.
