The Automated Machine Learning team at TU Eindhoven is seeking a passionate and talented Research Scientist to lead the development of an AutoML platform that integrates cutting-edge machine learning techniques with natural language interfaces.
The candidate will work closely with an exceptional team of engineers and researchers to design a system that makes AI more accessible, impactful, and responsible.
Artificial intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions, as long as it is safe and open to all. The team is building an exciting new platform to help people build performant and safe AI models through natural language interaction. This mission will combine automated machine learning with agentic systems to design machine learning models for a wide range of use cases, interactively and according to user goals, while continually evaluating AI safety and explainability.
Tasks
The candidate will develop state-of-the-art optimization models to capture:
- Research and implement state-of-the-art AutoML, fine-tuning, transfer learning, and meta-learning.
- Support a team of LLM experts to create intuitive natural language interfaces for AutoML.
- Integrate AI safety and explainable AI into interactive model design.
- Collaborate to tackle challenging technical problems and publish research in top venues.
Salary
- The gross monthly salary, depending on relevant experience, ranges between €2,872 to €3,670
- UvA additionally offers an extensive package of secondary benefits, including an 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
- 232 holiday hours per year (based on full-time) and extra holidays between Christmas and 1 January;
- multiple courses to follow from our Teaching and Learning Centre;

Job Requirements
- A strong background in machine learning.
- Self-driven researcher, with a PhD in machine learning research, or a comparable domain.
- Experience with AutoML, transfer learning, meta-learning, and foundation models is a plus.
- Experience in building scalable, user-friendly AI systems.
- Ability to conduct high-quality academic research, reflected in demonstrable outputs.
- Excellent programming skills.
- A team player who enjoys coaching PhD students and working in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.
- A proven ability to manage complex projects to completion on schedule.
- Excellent (written and verbal) proficiency in English, good communication, and leadership skills.
