PostDoc on Synthesis of Porous Electrodes for Redox Flow Batteries (Full-Time)

The Chemical Engineering and Chemistry calls for applications for a PostDoc position on Synthesis of Porous Electrodes for Redox Flow Batteries at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Netherlands (Full-Time).

Decarbonization of our energy economy is paramount to combat climate change. To enable widespread integration of renewable energy sources (e.g. solar and wind power) and assure grid stability, large-scale energy storage must be deployed on a worldwide scale. Redox flow batteries are a type of rechargeable electrochemical technology that can store megawatt-hours of electrical energy for long periods of time. Current flow batteries, on the other hand, have technological and economic problems, prompting researchers to look into novel chemistries and reactor forms in order to make significant advancements. Engineering the electrode microstructure and surface properties, in particular, is a significant way to improve the system’s performance, affordability, and durability.

Specifically, engineering the electrode microstructure and surface properties is a powerful approach to enhance the performance, cost, and durability of the system. However, to date, there is little knowledge on how to deterministically design porous electrodes which results in a reduced choice of electrode materials, mostly limited to fibrous-based substrates which fundamentally limit the performance of redox flow batteries. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop highly engineered electrode materials using versatile and scalable manufacturing techniques to unlock new electrochemical systems.

Duration: A full-time employment for 2 years.

Job Requirements

  • PhD in Electrochemistry, Electrochemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or a related discipline.
  • Expertise in redox flow batteries, polymer science, porous electrodes, and electrochemistry will be highly welcome.
