The of Faculty Technology, Policy, and Management, Delft University of Technology calls for applications for Postdoc Position on The Art of Climate Solidarity.
This project will study how artworks can contribute to emotional-moral deliberation on solidarity in the context of climate change.
Climate change is an urgent issue, induced by our lifestyle and use of technologies, that can lead to profound societal disruptions. Approaches to mitigate climate change require efforts that go beyond individualistic approaches to values and democracy as is common in many Western societies, which are in turn grounded in individualistic philosophical approaches. Non-Western and feminist approaches put more emphasis on relational concepts, such as care and solidarity. A challenge is how to evoke a sense of solidarity, care, and urgency concerning intangible, uncertain, and complex developments, such as climate change. Effects of climate change are continuous or chronic, which can make it easy to ignore them. Mitigating as well as adapting to climate change requires more awareness of the problems than is currently the case, and a willingness to make personal sacrifices by, for example, changing one’s lifestyle. Emotions, imagination, and art can play a role here.
