Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral position in the Computational Condensed Matter Physics group at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
The group is part of the Condensed Matter Theory group at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITFA) and Institute of Physics (IOP) at the UvA, the Delta Institute of Theoretical Physics (D-ITP), and QuSoft, the Dutch research center for quantum software. The successful applicant will be embedded in a stimulating research environment, including leading groups in condensed matter theory and experimentation.
The position is part of the NexGenTeN ERC project, which focuses on the development and application of 2D tensor network algorithms for the accurate study of strongly correlated quantum many-body systems. Research areas include the development of 2D tensor network algorithms for ground states, spectral functions, finite temperature simulations, open systems, and multi-scale approaches, with applications in single and multi-band Hubbard models, frustrated magnets, SU(N) systems, open quantum systems, and other strongly correlated systems.
Tasks
The duties of postdoctoral researcher in computational condensed matter physics thus include:
- conducting original research in the field of tensor networks applied to strongly correlated systems, resulting in academic publications in peer-reviewed international journals
- play an active role in the group, including collaboration with other group members and co-supervision of students
- participate in the CMT group activities (such as seminars, journal clubs, etc.)
- present his/her results at international workshops and conferences
Duration: 2-year postdoc position
Salary
- The gross monthly salary is dependent on relevant experience and ranges between €3,226 – €5.090 gross per month.
- 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end allowance
- multiple courses on topics such as leadership for academic staff;
- multiple courses on topics such as time management and handling stress and an online learning platform with 100+ different courses;
- 7 weeks birth leave (partner leave) with 100% salary;
- partly paid parental leave;
- the possibility of setting up a workplace at home;
- a pension at ABP for which UvA pays two-thirds of the contribution;
- the possibility of following courses to learn Dutch;
- help with housing for a studio or small apartment when you’re moving from abroad.
Job Requirements
The candidate for the postdoctoral jobs in computational condensed matter physics must:
- have a PhD in theoretical physics, preferably in condensed matter theory
- be committed researcher, demonstrated by publications in international refereed academic journals
- have strong expertise in strongly correlated systems and computational methods (ideally tensor network methods)
- show solid programming skills
- have ability to work independently and to collaborate in a collegial research environment
- show excellent written and oral English communication skills
Application Process
Applications should include the following information (all files besides CVs should be submitted in one single pdf file):
- a detailed CV including the months (not just years) when referring to education and work experience
- a letter of motivation
- a list of publications
- the names and email addresses of at least two references who can provide letters of recommendation.
