Research Officer in Numerical Support

The Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University in the Netherlands is inviting applications for the position of Research Officer in Numerical Support.

In recent years, the Department of Earth Sciences Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University, has seen a substantial increase in computational research related to topics ranging from the energy transition to blue-sky science. 

In the dynamic realm of research and analysis, the role of a Research Officer in Numerical Support is indispensable. This professional acts as a vital bridge between raw data and insightful conclusions. Armed with a keen analytical eye and advanced computational skills, these officers play a crucial role in modern research.

As a Research Officer, he/she will support the scientists in the department in computational research and education on topics ranging from sustainable use of the subsurface in the energy transition to understanding Earth’s processes across a broad range of space and time scales. He/she will be working in an engaging international environment by collaborating with junior and senior scientists. As such, candidate will have a pivotal role in the development of numerical research capabilities of the department.

Tasks

The successful candidate:

  • to collaborate with researchers to upgrade existing codes so that they better benefit from High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms and from GPU- and cloud-based computing;
  • work with scientists to develop and optimise machine learning software for discipline-specific data;
  • support and train researchers on research software design and management following FAIR principles by use of version control, documentation, packaging, and testing.

Salary

  • The gross salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience  – ranges between €3,377 and €4,640
  • Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.

Job Requirements

The Research Officer in Numerical Support position seek candidates with:

  • strong teamwork affinity to work in a diverse environment of junior and senior scientists;
  • good social and communication skills;
  • excellent skills in writing and speaking English;
  • and a critical, open, and interdisciplinary mindset;
  • A PhD involving computational research is an asset but is not required.
