The Research Institute for Marine Geodynamics (IMG), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), is recruiting Senior Researchers, Researchers Volcanoes, and Earth’s Interior Research Center (VERC).
Submarine volcanology involves pioneering research due to the limited opportunities for submarine volcano observation compared to land volcanoes. They are currently seeking researchers with an interest in submarine volcanoes, particularly those who can offer cross-disciplinary perspectives and innovative approaches. The successful candidates will be expected to develop skills continually that can be applied to volcanic research.
Tasks
The successful candidates will:
- Research on marine volcanoes through the application of volcanology, geophysics, geology, geochemistry, computer science, and other methods.
- Active development of methods required for (1)
- Construction of new marine volcanology through cross-disciplinary perspectives and active promotion of collaborative research.
Duration: 05 years
Starting Date: October 1, 2023
Salary
- Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)
e.g., JPY 6,000,000~8,000,000 - Upon appointment, the successful candidate will receive relocation allowances in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
- Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
- Employee and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for social insurance and labor insurance in the proportion specified by current statute.
- JAMSTEC employee cooperative provides various subsidies for mutual aid and welfare services.
- Housing lease service will be available in accordance with JAMSTEC bylaws.
- Annual vacations with pay, special vacations, leave of absence to care for a family member, and maternity leave are provided.
Job Requirements

- Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in a closely related field of research or technology development.
- Are willing and able to collaborate with other academic and non-academic partners, researchers, and non-academics.
